The Grand National’s first fixture
The origins of the Grand National can be traced back to the first official races at Aintree which were initiated by the owner of Liverpool’s Waterloo Hotel, Mr William Lynn. Lynn who leased the land from Lord Sefton, built a course, built a grandstand and staged the first grand national Flat fixture on July 7, 1829. When this race was run there was only 7 horses, and it was blatantly obvious that it was going to be a permentant fixture at the race course. Since then there has been over 150 races, each with their own up’s and downs and royal associations.
